Audio Bible

Posted by Little Things of Life on January 31, 2011

Last week, on the “PRAY for Our Troops” page, I posted a link to the “Military Outreach Project” of an organization called Faith Comes by Hearing.  For more on the Military Bible Stick and how you can help make this available to our soldiers and their families, please click here:

Military BibleStick

Amazingly, they have also produced an audio and text Bible in over 450 languages, available without charge both online and via iPhone, iPad, and Android apps.  It is handy for listening to a dramatized version of the Bible while driving, exercising, or doing housework.  For info about the availability of this Bible application, click on the picture below:

New Words!

Posted by Little Things of Life on January 28, 2011

Well, the major dictionaries have come up with their latest additions.
I’d like to share a few that I found particularly interesting. You may already know most of these.
You can run an online search for ‘new words’ and find many more.
There are also websites where you can make suggestions for next year’s new words, if you’d like(!)

automagically
adv.
Automatically in a way that seems magical.

catastrophize
v.
To present a situation as worse than it is.

chillax
v.
To calm down and relax.

flash mob
n.
Brief gathering for a common purpose, announced by e-mail or text.

heart
v.
To like very much, love.

matchy-matchy
adj.
Excessively color-coordinated.

microblog
v.
To post very short entries on a blog.

sheeple
n.
Unquestioning followers (from “sheep” + “people”).

soft skills
n.
Attributes that enable someone to interact harmoniously with others.

I can’t sign off without putting in a few comments of my own(!)  Please feel free to add your comments, also — I always enjoy hearing what you have to say!

I think the news media and politicians of all stripes have figured out how to catastrophize way too much!  This is an especially effective way to manipulate the sheeple in our population, who don’t seem to think for themselves very much of the time.  It’s much better on our physical and mental health just to chillax – and take time to decide which news items are worthy of our thought and concern, and which we’re better off to ignore.

The flash mobs got our attention during the Christmas holidays, singing the “Hallelujah Chorus” in malls around the country.  Microblogging was one of the ways they announced when and where their mobs would gather!

I don’t think too many fashionably dressed people worry about being matchy-matchy these days.  Most of us prefer a more eclectic look — and if we’re planning a staycation for the summer, there’s really no need to be matchy-matchy anyway!

I tend to heart those people who have soft skills.  Goodness knows our world needs more people these days who can interact harmoniously with each other.

As for my favorite of the new words above, I think it has to be “automagically.”  I’m going to have to figure ways that I can incorporate it into my conversation…it rolls off the tongue so easily and seems to imply some optimism.  I just think it’s a fun word to say!

Let me know if you find other new words that you’d like to share.
It’s always beneficial to increase our vocabulary, you know(!)

:)

Some of you have endured a really hectic week at work.
I hope now you can chillax, unwind, and have an enjoyable weekend!

The Gift Goes On

Posted by Little Things of Life on January 25, 2011

In my recent “Keeping Christmas” post, I started off with pictures of Christmas decorations packed up in containers, not to be seen again until next holiday season.

However, the real Christmas can’t be put on a shelf or stored in the attic until next December.  The ‘real deal’ is Jesus Christ, sent as God’s Gift to the world.

We can never enjoy any gift and receive the blessing that its giver intended, unless we open it and accept it as our own.  So it goes for The Gift of Jesus – But how do we unwrap it and make it our own?

The original Gift from God to us was His sending of His only Son to earth – God in human form – to teach us Who God is, and then to suffer and die to pay the penalty for our sins.

After Jesus rose from the dead and returned to heaven, to sit at God’s right hand and intercede for all believers, the second part of The Gift was sent to earth – God in the form of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the part of God that lives inside every believer.  Jesus in human form is no longer with us on earth, but His Spirit is with us and in us at all times – to:

  • convict us of our sins
  • guide and counsel us
  • encourage and comfort us
  • pray to the Father for us when we don’t know how to pray
  • be “God with us” at all times

It is up to each of us as believers to determine how important this Gift will be in our lives — and how much we will allow God to bless us through it.  When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, He fills us with God’s love and guides us in sharing it with others.  In this way, “The Gift of Love” goes on…..and on…..and on…..
