Do you know there are at least 25 definitions for the adjective “old” in the dictionary???
I have chosen to apply several of them to my weekly challenge post.
The children in our neighborhood probably would say that I am ‘old.’
Since I’m in my mid-’60s, I prefer to consider my octogenarian and nonagenarian friends as the ones who are ‘old’!
For posting photos, I decided to start with the big round number of 100.
My mother was born in 1911, so her baby book is almost 100 years old.

Because she was prematurely gray, I never knew her when she had the beautiful auburn hair of her youth,
so I have always treasured this page from her baby book.
I’m so thankful my grandmother chose to include a lock of Mother’s baby hair for me to see and touch!

My father was several years older than my mother,
so his gold baby ring is over 100 years old.
Notice the price of $1.00 written in the top of the tiny little box from the jewelry store.

This rocking chair first belonged to my mother’s uncle when he was a little boy, so it is well over 100 years old.

I have thought of refinishing it, to remove some of the old varnish that has darkened over time.
However, I have decided not to disturb the soft patina that has been worn into the surface
by generations of little children bobbing back and forth in this little chair!
Some of that wear and tear was put there by me – and then more by our own children –
too many good memories to remove with chemical products!
When the original leather seat finally wore out, it was temporarily replaced with a plain wooden seat;
one of these days, I would like to restore the seat to a more period-appropriate surface.

Now, to go waaaay back in history — and apply another definition of ‘old,’ let’s look at a diamond.

Diamonds are the hardest surface known to man.
According to the American Museum of Natural History,
diamonds are ‘formed in the Earth’s interior and shot to the surface by extraordinary volcanoes.
A diamond is likely the oldest thing you’ll ever own,
probably 3 billion years in age, fully two-thirds the age of the Earth.’
When I look down at the engagement ring on my left hand,
I can’t really comprehend how old 3 billion years must be!
If you wear a piece of diamond jewelry, try looking at it with this fact in mind –
and see if it doesn’t change your perspective just a little bit!
The only thing I can think of that is older…
is the Earth itself.

and ‘the beginning’ is about as far back as we can go…
