Althea Painting

 Last week I posted pictures of an Althea bush growing in our yard.

My friend Carol, a very prolific and creative artist, painted this picture of a bud I had photographed.

Althea (Rose of Sharon)

We have a sentimental sort of attachment to this althea shrub.  My husband’s mother had a beautiful one, which we always admired; she would frequently cut a flower and float it in a dish on her breakfast-room table. When our althea blooms, it reminds us of her. 

I found it interesting that when I posted one of these photos on my Facebook page, I received comments from friends who remembered the althea/Rose of Sharon from their childhood, as well.  It is a hardy, practically carefree shrub.  Perhaps that is why it was a favorite of “the greatest generation”!
