This entry is dedicated to my grandmother Flora. She penned and sketched this work of art circa 1911. It is framed in a hand-rubbed walnut frame made by my grandfather Les. For many decades, the framed design hung on the wall above a beautiful cherry hand-finished desk that Les made for Flora in his workshop in their backyard.
My mother learned this verse when she was quite young, by hearing her mother repeat it to her often. When Mother got older and learned to read, she discovered that she had memorized the verse incorrectly. Her “little girl” version of the last two lines was “God will help the bear ‘what comes’ tomorrow”!! She always enjoyed telling her family and friends the story of “the bear”! LOL!!
My grandmother was a very creative homemaker – and my grandfather was a skilled craftsman and woodworker. Whatever creative tendencies I have, I think I probably inherited from them. Best of all, they shared much of what they made with others. Today, there are many family members and friends who still treasure things that my grandparents made and gave away.
Flora eventually gave this framed verse to my mother. When it was time to sell the old home-place, she also gave the desk to my mother – and both occupied a special place in my parents’ home for many years. Now the artwork hangs on the wall in our home. The cherry desk holds our laptop computer, and the cubby-holes are full of CDs, DVDs, extra cords, adaptors, battery-chargers, etc. My grandparents would be mystified at the curious things occupying the desk that used to hold simple notepaper, a fountain pen, wooden pencils, and 2-cent stamps!
